The Seasons of the Church

We are now in Lent

Lent start on Ash Wednesday, when we have our Imposition of the Ashes services.  Ash Wednesday was on 17 February this year. Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence – and you may recall many an Old Testament reference to ‘sackcloth and ashes’ as an outward and visible sign of what was going on internally for someone.  Accordingly, we gather our Palm crosses to be burnt and so we have something that connects us all together, that connects us through the calendar year of the church, and that tangibly connects us with what we are about to do as we embark on our Lenten journey.

Lent is the season in the church calendar of self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study and preparation for Easter.  Churches are often kept bare of flowers and decoration.  There are no weddings during Lent, the Gloria is not sung and the word ‘alleluia’ is traditionally not spoken.  The 40 days of Lent accord with the 40 Jesus spent in the wilderness, so it’s a time of reflection as well as preparation.  Sometimes people give up things for Lent to help them focus on their relationship with God.  All of this may sound a bit like hard work!  But it’s important to remember where we are heading throughout Lent  – towards the joy of Easter Day.
