The Seasons of the Church

We are now in Eastertide.

Eastertide, or the Easter Season is the period of fifty days from Easter Sunday to The Day of Pentecost or Whit Sunday, which is on 5 June this year.

Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. It was originally a Jewish Festival and already had a great history by the time the Early Christian Church was beginning to form.  The word Pentecost is from the Greek meaning fiftieth as it comes 50 days after the festival of Passover when the first fruits of the corn harvest were presented, partly as a sign of gratitude and partly as a prayer that the rest of the harvest would be safely gathered in too.  It commemorated the giving of the law to Moses on Mount Sinai, and it was a great public holiday.

The name Whitsun, or Whit Sunday comes from the white robes that were worn by the newly baptized on this day. The Anglican Church marks it with the colour red, as red is for the Holy Spirit or for the Martyrs of the Church.

Ascension Day occurs during Eastertide, on the fortieth day of Easter. The Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, also known as Ascension Thursday or Holy Thursday, commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven.
